New Wii Games Carry on Early Precedent
By: Tim Frederick Posted on June 17th, 2008 under WiiA popular genre on Wii has been sports games, and with baseball season upon us, and my Blue Jays in their customary third position (though the Rays and Yankees have shockingly flipped the first and last place scripts at this stage), we’re seeing some new baseball games on the Wii horizon.
A highly popular series in Japan that finally reached our shores last year for the first time, MLB Power Pros 2008 from Konami will be hitting the Wii in late July. With its large selection of modes, RPG style player development and simple but tight play, it wouldn’t be surprising if this game became popular with baseball fans on this side of the Pacific as well.
Backyard Baseball ’09 will also be hitting in early June, a series somewhat modeled after the above series, with cute, big-headed players and simple play mechanics. Also on the sports front is Top Spin 3, We Love Golf!, and NCAA Football 09.
Music games are one of the hottest genres in gaming right now, and two of the front runners will see new releases on Wii in the coming months, Rock Band, and Guitar Hero: Aerosmith. Get your guitar tuned up and ready to rock this summer.
Racing fans won’t be left out of the fun, with Cocota Kart Racer looking to knock Mario off his kart racing pedestal. Other offerings include Wacky Races: Crash and Dash, Yamaha Super Cross, and Ford Racing Off Road. Racing fans of just about any style will be well represented.
Lastly, early July sees the release of a new Chocobo’s Dungeon game. Similar to the recently released Baroque, as well the DS’s Shiren the Wanderer, Izuna, and Pokemon’s Mystery Dungeon, Chocobo will roam the randomly generated dungeons in turn-based fashion, encountering all manner of traps, enemies and items along the way. Chocobo also has the ability to change jobs and appearance in this iteration.
